welcome to micaia working for local prosperity in a sustainable world eco-micaia eco-micaia helped start the mozambique honey company in 2014. it has since doubled its honey buying, securing 12 tons of honey from a total of 300 beekeepers. this helps to stabilise the local economy by securing small businesses income. baobab is an iconic african tree its fruit containing a powder-coated seed of increasing commercial value worldwide. eco-micaia carried out a feasibility study and concluded that there are national and export market opportunities for the local woman farmers. you can make a difference £10/mth = £120/year. with giftaid this is worth £150/year. a small monthly commitment goes a long way to helping people out of poverty. micaia is working in mozambique to help people challenge poverty and create lasting change in their lives and communities. poverty is ugly . it destroys peoples’ lives. it is an injustice. it is also the reality of daily life for 55% of all mozambicans and more than 75% of those who live in rural areas. yet read the economist and you’re likely to find glowing references to an african success story. ten years of economic growth averaging 8% per year probably does feel like success for the top 10% of earners who enjoy more than 50% of mozambique’s gross national income. but when only 12% of working age people has a waged job, we see the absurdity of measuring ‘progress’ by gnp. economic growth is meaningless if it fails to address extreme inequality and embedded poverty. read more about the situation in mozambique the challenge – a growing economy masks a growing and deepening poverty in mozambique, the majority of people do not have enough income to attain an adequate level of well being. only 12% of working age people has a job that pays them a salary. household income is just $100/month, which spread among an average of 7 people does not go very far in covering the costs of medicine, school fees, clothing and food. but huge investment is taking place in mozambique, and it is mostly focused on extraction – at a rate and scale that is unsustainable. the type of economic growth that we are seeing in mozambique is creating a situation of gross inequality. while the top 10% of earners enjoy more than 50% of the gross national income, the proportion of people living on less than $0.65 per day (less than $240 pa) is still 55% of the population. there are two main reasons for this. first, is the emphasis on investment in the export of raw materials over investment in a diversified local economy in which local communities can participate successfully. second, and as a consequence of the first reason, ordinary mozambicans are not being supported to develop the capabilities they need to secure sustainable livelihoods and map their own path out of poverty. economic growth is meaningless if it fails to address extreme inequality and embedded poverty. this situation is set to deteriorate because mozambique is one of the most climate affected countries in the world and the on-going effects of climate change continue to further undermine the efforts of ordinary people to develop the capabilities they need to climb out of poverty. it doesn’t have to be this way . mozambique is attracting $5billion+ of foreign investment annually because it has a rich array of natural resources, and huge potential for large-scale food production. its growing middle class creates immense opportunities for investors in the local market. currently though, most investment is targeted on extraction – take the resource out of mozambique – or on services (for the rich). there are alternative models, investing in ways that create more opportunities for local people to work their way out of poverty. this is at the heart of micaia’s work. read more about micaia’s alternative investment models this situation is unnecessary mozambique is endowed with a rich array of natural resources, a large and youthful labour force, and it holds great potential for food production and related industries. mozambicans are highly enterprising and have a huge appetite for development. where the right kind of investments have been made in people and their capabilities we have seen a reduction in poverty, and the conditions seeded in which others are able to find new ways of improving their circumstances. mozambique not only attracts huge foreign investment it is now generating millions of us$ in domestic investment. sadly, most of that investment appears still to be focused on creating more services for the rich, on retail, and on extraction of raw materials for export. at local level micaia is demonstrating alternative approaches that create local goods for local markets and build businesses in which suppliers have a valuable stake. in sectors such as natural products, agriculture and tourism micaia is pioneering inclusive business development. as a beekeeper who sells to mozambique honey company (mhc) – one of micaia’s social investments – senhora quiteria is steadily transforming her life and the lives of her children. she always kept a few hives but before being trained by micaia the quality of her honey was poor and difficult to sell. she knew little about the honey market and was only able to make a sale if someone came to her house. today, senhora quiteria is the president of her group of 22 women beekeepers. she has 20 hives of her own and oversees the group’s 100 hives provided on credit by micaia. she sells honey to mozambique honey company – which supplies the national market – and uses the income to pay labourers to work her vegetable farm, which means more produce, more income and paying jobs. she can now afford to pay school fees for her children, thereby passing on the benefits of her efforts to the next generation. mhc has won awards for its honey (see news ) and is the only honey business in mozambique trading across the country through formal supermarkets, competing with imports from as far afield as china and argentina. the mozambique honey company expects to sell c12 tons of honey into the mozambican market in 2015, as well as 7-10 tons for export. that means more than 400 beekeepers like mrs will have a valuable livelihood. poverty is complex ; a one size fits all response will not lead to sustainable or effective solutions. micaia’s response is different. we recognize that enabling people to tackle poverty and vulnerability has some key elements: ensuring that all people have the basic food and other needs met; strengthening and diversifying local economies; helping people manage in a sustainable way the natural resources on which we all depend; helping people to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to make informed decisions and to take action to secure their rights. these four themes form what micaia terms the ‘four pillars of local prosperity’. read more about micaia’s approach micaia has developed a successful alternative the complexities of poverty and the barriers to addressing it in different contexts mean that a one size fits all response will not lead to sustainable or effective solutions. micaia’s response is different. we have learned that it is essential to support people to prosper across a diversity of related issues including financial, social, environmental, which means that our response is holistic and flexible . our innovative hybrid model and clear focus on one area of mozambique has over the last five years led us to identify the four key elements for successfully enabling people to tackle poverty in a systematic way: ensuring that people have the capability to meet their basic needs, including sufficient food of adequate nutritional value, bodily and mental health, security, supported by the provision of fundamental services. enabling people t
